At the start of the COVID-19 crisis, the outlook was bleak for the maker of sparkling drinks 1642. With the closure of bars and restaurants, more than 30% of its turnover fell. suddenly passed out. It was then that the government of François Legault encouraged consumers to consume locally. “It was the trigger for the takeover for 1642,” says Bastien Poulain, the founder.
The phone rang. Our partners, Metro and IGA, have put our products on the shelves and in their flyers at no cost. Consumers answered the call, and orders poured in. ”
New clients
They say good news never comes alone … Other retailers have set up local buying initiatives, including Maxi who offered 1642 a test with his famous tonic. “We expected to receive an order for 10 cases. Finally, the demand was more than 900 cases! This is the largest purchase order we have received to date, “said Bastien Poulain, who then urgently contacted his bottler, Vergers Paul Jodoin, of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, in Montérégie. “They were flexible in modifying their production, which allowed us to deliver on time. ” Since June 3, 1642 has also been present in 15 Couche-Tard branches. “If the test is successful, we could enter more than 400 stores in Quebec by mid-July. ”
Another novelty: the sodas and tonics of the SME will soon be found in the baskets of Lufa Farms. Finally, thanks to Sobeys, 1642 will make its first breakthrough outside Quebec when its products will soon be available in 200 stores in Ontario.
